In July 2014, the ICON team took a short break from the production line and traveled to EAA AirVenture in Oshkosh, Wisconsin, to celebrate the unveiling of the first production A5.
On Sunday night, prior to the start of the show, ICON’s first production aircraft, Engineering Serial Number 1 (ESN-1), was revealed. ESN-1 is the first plane built to the final A5 design using both production tooling and process control systems, and the biggest milestone to date in our company’s history. The construction and first flight of ESN-1 are significant achievements by ICON’s designers, engineers, and technicians that pave the way for FAA approval, as well as initial customer delivery in May of 2015.
Below is a recap of the event, which was led by ICON’s Founder & CEO, Kirk Hawkins:
Following the unveiling, ICON’s CTO and VP of Engineering, Matthew Gionta, and VP of Design, Klaus Tritschler, led a guided tour of ESN-1. The videos below offer an in-depth look at some of the unique features of the plane:
– Bow Ring
– Taxi & Landing Lights
– Nose Wheel & Wing Cuff Mirrors
– Seawings™ Platforms
With ESN-1 complete, the flight test program is now underway. Construction of ESN-2, the second production A5 which will be used for structural testing, is also progressing. Both of these aircraft will be used to support the FAA approval process.
