Manufacturer’s Recommendation:
• Mix all coatings using manufacturer’s recommendations. Deviations from the manufacturer’s recommended ratios must be approved by ICON Aircraft.
• Materials must be mixed in a manner consistent with your state’s VOC limitations.
• Prior to mixing, inspect all material containers for obvious damage or leaks. Materials in damaged or leaking containers shall not be used.
• Ensure all components of the mixture are 60°F or warmer prior to mixing.
• Ensure all mixing containers, measuring tools, and other tools used in the process are clean and free of contamination.
Task Instructions
1. Carefully remove paint and bodywork locally:
Note:
Do not use chemical strippers to remove surface protection. Chemical strippers may leave a residue and breakdown the epoxy resin.
a. For paint removal only, lightly abrade the surface using 120-240 grit emery cloth, sanding by hand.
b. For primer, filler, and bodywork removal, lightly abrade the surface using 60-120 grit aluminum oxide paper when sanding by hand, or 80-180 grit aluminum oxide material when sanding with orbital/rotary sanders. Abrade surface in a random pattern. Replace or clean sandpaper often.
c. To prevent Foreign Object Debris (FOD), frequently remove debris with clean dry compressed air and a vacuum.
Note:
When blending, trimming, drilling, or abrading composites, carbon dust is released into the air. Use appropriate protection (typically a respirator) to prevent dust inhalation.
2. Refer to the manufacturer’s technical data to determine mixing, application, and cure/dry times for any materials used based on temperature and humidity.
3. Mask areas of the paint using masking tape and paper to prevent overspray.
Note:
Apply paint so that no bridging between parts occurs.
4. Apply the coatings:
a. Pin hole filler: by brush, squeegee, or rag
b. Surfaces: Spray. Brush, roller, or squeegee can also be used.
c. Topcoats: Spray. Touch up and small repairs may be accomplished with a brush with consideration to the cosmetic appearance.
d. Accent Stripes/Colors: Spray. Touch up and small repairs may be accomplished with a small brush with consideration to the cosmetic appearance.
Note:
The cure/dry times for all coatings may vary due to temperature and humidity.
Verification Method
Ensure all paint has properly cured prior to operation.
